Tim Pawlenty On The Issues

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty is now in the running for president in the 2012 republican primary, but where does he stand on the issues? Read more on Pawlenty and his beliefs on America.

Pawlenty On Abortion

Pawlenty says if we can change the hearts and minds of friends and family then we can move closer to end abortions in America. In Minnesota the governor was able to pass the "Women's Right To Know" law which stalls abortion and helps educate women before they choose to terminate their pregnancy. He is recognized by the Minnesota pro-life group "Citizens Concerned for Life" as well as appointed a Pro-Life judge to the state Supreme Court.

In recent claims he has stated he wishes to overturn Roe V. Wade and opposes fetal stem cell research. However he acknowledges that this can only be done through the courts.

Pawlenty On The Economy and Taxes

Pawlenty argues the best way to fix the economy and the looming deficit is to cut government waste and entitlement programs such as Medicare. He argues we need to look at the tax rates for corporations, individuals, capital gains rates and simply the tax code and make it pro growth. However he hasn't taken a clear stance on the Flat Tax, he says we should try to make the rates more flat but wouldn't advocate for an all-out Flat Tax. He criticizes Ben Bernanke and the FED printing more money and devaluing the American dollar.

He was criticized himself for having a one billion dollar budget deficit in 2009 and high spending in the state. Democrats blasted Pawlenty for leaving a 6.2 billion dollar budget deficit in the state, however Pawlenty denies there is such a deficit and claims it is just a bureaucratic projection.

On the other hand, does Pawlenty walk the walk on the issues of taxes? He has been accused by members of the DFL party in Minnesota of raising taxes on the Minnesota residents by use of what the republicans call "fees". For example these fees were raised on cigarettes, college tuition, corporations, parking tickets, marriage licenses, and a 2.7 million dollar raise in property taxes from 2003-2007.

Pawlenty On ObamaCare

Pawlenty is against Obamacare and believes Minnesota should sue over the government takeover. He compared Obamacare to being General Motors in the 1970's where on size fits all, he instead believes health care should be more like an iphone where consumers can make the choices in their healthcare decisions. If he were president he would repeal the federal healthcare bill and relinquish the power back to the states.
Moreover he says there are state programs that do help those that are in need of adequate health care services and instead of prescribing a mandate for those citizens they should be offered competitive care through the private market.

Pawlenty On Gay Issues

Pawlenty is opposed to gay marriage and would not support overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. In Minnesota he supported a state ban on non traditional marriages and appointed judges while governor that would not support any other definition of marriage.
Furthermore, Pawlenty would try to reinstate Don't Ask Don't Tell in the military and agrees with the combat troops that overwhelmingly do not approve of the law's repeal.

Pawlenty On Right To Bear Arms

Pawlenty is an advocate for gun rights that are legally bestowed to Americans in our constitution. As governor he approved of the concealed weapons legislation for law abiding citizens. He's consistently been given A ratings by the NRA over the last decade for his work to preserve the right to own guns.

Pawlenty On Foreign Policy

Pawlenty supported the no fly zone in Libya to offer the rebels a window to take over Gaddafi, however he believes Obama acted too late. He believes that some interfering in different countries across the Middle East will be necessary. Such as pulling out the ambassador and denouncing publically and boldly the dictators there. However, he did say he wouldn't put forces on the ground, but would explore all other options.
